with a couple of switches, broadly agreed...ultimately we aren't good enough.

Sorry, posted too soon.

I make it that we have 8 good players in the squad (Fabianski, Cresswell, Coufal, Ogbonna, Rice, Soucek, Lingard, Antonio), 8 average players in the squad (Dawson, Diop, Balbuena, Fredericks, Masuaku, Noble, Fornals, Bowen), and 7 shit players in the squad (Randolph, Martin, Johnson, Benrahma, Lanzini, Yarmolenko Odubeko)

A squad full of average and shit players will not finish in the Champions League positions.

stewie griffin 4:35 Mon May 17
Re: ⚽ Brighton v West Ham ⚒ - Official Match Thread
exactly, so you have to elevate the standard of the first team, not just add 'depth'. You drop out all the shit ones (some of whom, like Yarmolenko are earning 140k a week) and you replace them with 'good'

We're lacking in CM(lanzini done 1 decent job for us there), Left back, (johnson and Arthur aren't good enough), Striker(obviously).

Not suggesting our current squad isn't as good as it's been for a long time, but for me this is the reason we've fallen short.

Re: ⚽ Brighton v West Ham ⚒ - Official Match Thread
It's not about quantity, it is about quality.

GK – Fabianksi - good, Randolph - shit, Martin - shit
Full backs/Wing backs – Coufal - good, Cresswell - good, Fredericks - average, Masuaku - average, Johnson - shit
Centre Backs – Ogbonna - good, Dawson - average, Diop - average, Balbuena - average
Central Midfield – Rice - good, Soucek - good, Noble - average. Options – Lanzini - past it/shit, Fornals - average
Attacking Midfield/Wingers – Benrahma - shit, Fornals - average, Lingard - good, Bowen - average, Lanzini - past it/shit, Yarmolenko - past it/shit. Option - Antonio (Anderson on loan)
Strikers – Antonio - good, Mipo - shit. Options – Lingard - good, Bowen - average

I make it that we have 8 good players in the squad (Fabianski, Cresswell, Coufal, Ogbonna, Rice, Soucek, Lingard, Antonio

An average PL manager would see us get 10th.

A well less than average squad (size) would see us, oh, say, fifteenth.

Combine the two and we should be bouncing between 17th and 18th.

How come we're not?

Re: ⚽ Brighton v West Ham ⚒ - Official Match Thread
Alf – you’re always reasonable, so I’ll address it to you. “I happen to agree that it is the squad size and depth that utimately derailed the top 4”

GK – Fabianksi, Randolph, Martin
Full backs/Wing backs – Coufal, Cresswell, Fredericks, Masuaku, Johnson
Centre Backs – Ogbonna, Dawson, Diop, Balbuena
Central Midfield – Rice, Soucek, Noble. Options – Lanzini, Fornals
Attacking Midfield/Wingers – Benrahma, Fornals, Lingard, Bowen, Lanzini, Yarmolenko. Option - Antonio (Anderson on loan)
Strikers – Antonio, Mipo. Options – Lingard, Bowen

With the obvious exception of the striker position, exactly how many more bodies do you think we need for a 38 game season with no European football? When have we ever had 4 Premier league quality centre backs? Full backs? 6 (7 including Antonio, 8 including Anderson) to occupy the 3 roles behind the striker?
Which of the names above make you groan when they’re on the teamsheet? I’m going to guess one, maybe two? That’s not a sign of a lack of size or depth.
If you can point me to a time in our history when we had a stronger, deeper squad, I’m all ears – but there isn’t one, other than maybe the start of the season when we had Haller as a different option up front (and Josh Cullen as 4th choice central midfielder, although Lanzini against Burnley was better than anything I’ve seen from Cullen)…but I dare say Lingard has scored more than Haller would have, or any other Jordan Hugill-esque striker we might have signed.

Truth is, we’ve just not been quite good enough when it’s mattered. Rather than focusing on more bodies, we need to improve the quality of the first team in order to challenge further.
As said last night, the glaring difference between our squad and others is the fact that the above names aren’t supplemented by academy products. I doubt even Moyes wanted more senior pros or bodies, there simply isn’t enough football in a 38 game season to keep them all happy if any of them have any vague ambition to actually play.

We were never in "pole position", we were in with a shout but with a tough run of fixtures finished off with "easier" fixtures.

Stop talking absolute nonsense.

Anyone who thought we'd actually get CL needs a head wobble, yes we had the chance but the reality was we'd just miss out.

Re: ⚽ Brighton v West Ham ⚒ - Official Match Thread
How about finishing 7th but having gained huge momentum and this helping us keep our better players for another season. We then have Spurs looking over their shoulders and their better players wanting to leave?

It's something I didn't think remotely possible before this season.

Yep, I'd go with that. I still think we have a good chance of 6th but need Leicester NOT to win tomorrow.

At least with the Conference League it will give fans a chance to dust down there non-European passports and have some trips, and stating the obvious it will mean some games against European sides, which is always a welcome change rather than just playing English teams the whole season.

There has been talk that teams will play their U-23' in it, but who knows at this point.

My benchmark for football disappointment is the FA cup final 2006 and Gerard’s extra time equaliser.

Nothing since has come near it.

Good post as ever Sir Alf .
Regarding youth, the two you mentioned are both CB’s as far as I know .
Would be great if they can step up .
I would love if Mipo can step up though , give me a goal scorer over a defender every day oif the week .
Fitness permitting he has to be given every chance in pre season. Of course he will be a back up , but let’s give him a chance .

Good question.

I suppose it 7th and Euro Conference would be a start and at least some away days abroad but I will still be bitterly disappointed its not Europa League which, as I said with Arse, Spurs and Everton off the pace this year should've been a dead cert considering the way we have played.

So I suppose, in answer to your actual question, would it be acceptable? Not really, considering we were 5th with 4 games to go. But, if it is 7th then we take it and move forward with it.

I think Zico makes some good points about perception. I just suppose it is where your perception is right now.

Sir Alf 2:20 Mon May 17

Totally agree. On top of getting the recruitment right I hope the staff continue to and get better at improving current or incoming players. As fans we concentrate on new signings but Moyes has improve some of the current squad, Antonio, Cresswell and Masuaku being three examples. That's the point of coaching and if he can for instance improve the finishing skills of someone like Fornals then there is a good player in there.
